Literature has the greatest impact on our 21st century society because the literature tells the reader exactly what people in the baroque period were going through. They also incorporated moral lessons into their writing.
ReplyDeleteAs said in the textbook “the impact of Spanish civilization on the new world. To understand the flowering of the Spanish baroque,” (pg.129). Deep romantic novels and stories of rich people falling love became very popular at this time. These themes are still very popular in literature today. The literature also separated the aristocrats because it was all about aristocratic values and their view of the world and what it should be. Everything that can be wrong with a man is wrapped up in to one person. Don Juan shows the 21st century society what a person should not be like. The phrase “They’re such a Don Juan” is used even now in reference to this story. The story is about a man named Don Juan a man who seduced women and has no regard for polity and morality. By reading the literature of the baroque time period and discussing it with people I have found that the baroque period is not unlike our own. The authors write about what they want the world to look like, about romances people can only read about. Characters in novels can be richer than kings and show the world through their eyes. In Don Juan’s case the author is showing a man who has everything and can get anything but it’s not the man that anyone want to be or should want to be.

Baroque paintings set ways for the artists of the 21st century. These artists in the Baroque era focused on lighting and taking the realistic aspects of the things that they were portraying. They used lighting to get their messages across to the world. These paintings that they produced were almost like photographs that were taken before there was any type of camera invented.(mr.weil) These artists used lighting to point out certain aspects in their painting. They used lighting and shading to make their pictures seem more realistic and to help give meaning to their art. The lighting helped draw out strong characteristics within each painting.
ReplyDeleteUsing different lighting techniques during the Baroque era has helped multiple professions in the modern day 21st century. In movies, directors use lighting as a way to manipulate the audience to focus on one aspect within that scene. They will focus it on one character because that character maybe carrying the main message that the directors are trying to tell the audience. They will use lighting to persuade the audience to think a certain way about a scene or character. Not only in movies is lighting used but also in photographs. Photographers will apply lighting to the backgrounds of pictures in order to focus viewers attention to one aspect of the picture such as in newspapers if there is a government official that has done something either good or bad they will lighting to portray that person in order to help support the article and statements being made about that official.
The technique of lighting has been used since the Baroque period. It has allowed artists to give their paintings a more realistic feel and also to get their messages across to the public.
Out of the three topics mentioned above, i believe that baroque literature had the biggest influence on 21st century culture. Evidence of this can be found all over the media, in books, television and movies, and our modern culture altogether. Similar to the other baroque arts, baroque literature also focused on conflict, paradox, contrast, metaphysical concern, eroticism, and heightened sense of spirituality. This came out of changes that happened with religion and science that changed the way people thought. During the time Spain and England were two important places for literature.
ReplyDeleteSpain had an especially large role in baroque literature considering it was home to novelist Cervantes who became famous and remains famous today for "Don Quioxte," a literary classic, Luis de Gongora, a famous poet, who's poetry is still prevelent today considering that I read it in Spanish class last year, and famous writer Lope de Vega. Being that all of these writers and their works are still talked about today, show how much of an impact they have had on literature and how we as a society think.
A large aspect of our society is how we treat women, and on page 131 of our textbook, it explains how Don Juan helped to bring the image of woman from someone to have a "courtly adoration" of, to someone to take advantage of because of their fallibility. The text says that he used women mostly for the love of the game itself, and I believe that this is common for men in today's society, rooted from the ideas that Cervantes instilled in his literature through Don Juan in this case, in the baroque era.
English "Metaphysical" poetry also changed literature due to how it described spiritual things in sensual ways, changing the way people thought about and read poetry forever.
This is why I believe baroque writing played the largest role of the three topics mentioned above in how our society is today, being that much of it is still prevalent today and contains ideas that will always stay applicable to the current situation.
